Built-in Security Features in the WD Sentinel S-Series
By Paul Chen, Senior Product Line Manager, Western Digital
Designed as the perfect first server for small businesses and branch offices, the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100 come with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials pre-installed and pre-initialized – providing network user and resource security with an Active Directory Server right out of the box. As the primary server and potentially only server in a business, the WD Sentinel S- Series includes a unique set of features that ensure a business’s critical data is protected and stored with maximum security. This article discusses some of those key features.
Trusted Platform Module(TPM) – WD Sentinel S-Series are Windows Server 2012 R2 Certified as a TPM Platform and come with built in TPM. TPM is an industry standard way of providing cryptographic services that maintain platform integrity. These key services are performed in WD Sentinel hardware through a built in chip, which because of its unique nature, can perform platform level authentication. This enables businesses to deploy a security software and services layer for added protection. See the certification here.
Windows BitLocker - BitLocker Drive Encryption is a security feature of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials that provides added protection for the both the operating system and data. BitLocker uses TPM to provide enhanced data protection with the ability to do full drive encryption.
BitLocker Drive Encryption used in conjunction with WD Sentinel’s TPM module are useful for businesses that need the added comfort that the encrypted drives/data can only be read by their unique WD Sentinel. Read more about Microsoft’s Bitlocker here.
Secure Boot – Rootkits are any type of stealthy malicious software designed to hide the existence of certain processes or programs. As part of the malicious attacks, rootkits may modify signatures and keys in order to change the security profile of your Server. UEFI Secure Boot is an approach to combating a boot level rootkit.
The WD Sentinel comes out of the box with Secure Boot enabled. The UEFI Secure boot works by verifying all the signatures for the boot firmware and keys before booting. If a signature verify fails during a UEFI secure boot, the boot process stops which prevents security business exposure caused by a rootkit.
Physical Security – The WD Sentinel S-Series products come with a front door lock and a Kensington lock to protect the hard drives as well as the full unit from being easily taken. The ultra-compact design also has an added benefit- Several partners have commented that the small form factor makes it easy to carry the business (in the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100) to safety in the event of a disaster.

WD Sentinel DS6100 is a compact file server system from Western Digital (WD), one of the two primary disk drive manufacturers in the world today. This product and the DS5100 are new additions to WD’s Sentinel line of network-attached storage (NAS) solutions designed for the small- to medium-sized business. In this test drive we’ll explore the features and functionality of this product and see what it can offer a small business that certainly has a lot of NAS options to choose from.
Most businesses—whether organically or by design—expand to multiple workgroups and branch offices as the organization grows and evolves. It’s a challenge for these different groups and offices to access and share data, and choosing the right storage solution without adversely impacting the entire company can be a daunting and confusing decision.
Traditionally, the task of managing data across workgroups and remote offices has been the domain of large corporations. However, companies of all sizes benefit from utilizing workgroups focused on common business goals. And forward-thinking companies are keen to take advantage of the opportunities provided by branches located closer to bedroom communities and pools of talented people.
The explosion of data, the dramatic rise in file sizes, and the need to access data from anywhere at any time via mobile devices create five unique trends for managing data storage for workgroups and branch offices.
